Lesson 21: “Looking Forth for the Great Day of the Lord to Come”,
Doctrine and Covenants and Church History Gospel Doctrine
Show the following picture. It is ok if they have seen it before; the object is just to talk about what the lesson of the picture is. Ask the class, “What do you see in this picture?” Ask why there are different answers when there is only one picture. Talk with the class about how we often see what we are looking for. Ask for other examples in life where two people may look at the same thing, but see very different results. Now ask the class to write down (actually give them a piece of paper and have them write it down, or most won’t) 5 words that they think of when they think of the 2nd Coming. Many of the answers will be positive, and hopefully some will be negative or fearful. Ask, “Why are some excited and some scared about the 2nd coming? Is anyone both? Why?”
Today we are going to talk about both sides of the 2ndComing. Pick some of your favorite sections from this lesson. Split the class into two groups. Ask one group to find all the things that excite them about the second coming in that section and ask the other half to find all the things that may scare some people in that section. Then have the class be ready to share. (You can put lots of scriptures up there and tell the class to simply pick a few sections. It is ok if everyone doesn’t get to all of it. You won’t have time to discuss all the verses anyway, but make sure to put up some of your favorite passages so you get to talk about some of the things that you felt were most important.)
Based on this lesson, what would you tell someone is the most important thing to remember so that you are excited and not scared about the second coming? Are you doing that thing?
